02 Music Band Branding
I decided to design a set of posters for the Japanese rock band ZU- TOMAYO because I was inspired by their songs and themes related to ‘night’. ZUTOMAYO’s original Japanese name in English means ‘I wish it was midnight all the time’.
Summary
Deriving from using planets as my main subject matter of the posters,
I had the idea to make 8 posters which each corresponds to a planet
in the solar system. I also enlarged a letter in the band name for each poster so when all 8 posters are arranged together, the band name can still be easily read from afar.
I used my own typeface, “Half Life”, in the design and the thickness of typeface decreases by halves which makes it seem to be fading. I intend to represent a feeling of melting into the night by using the typeface. The title of the concert is included on the side and each letter is in the colour of a planet in the solar system. I used the golden ratio template when I was deciding on the composition of the poster.
The flat blocks of colours for the planet is inspired by Ste- ven Thomas’ See America WPA posters. Furthermore, the watercolour mark making background is inspired by Alphonse Mucha, in particular to how he blended colours in his work. It is hard to blend dark watercolours without the colours getting messy, thus I utilised inverted colours and worked with them on the white paper and then used Photoshop to invert the colours afterwards.
